Dumpster Rental FAQ

Dumpster rental questions, answered

These are the questions customers ask most before renting a roll-off dumpster, answered in plain language. Prices, permits, and rules vary by city and company, so use this as a starting point and confirm the details with the local company you call.

Choosing a size

What dumpster sizes are there?

Most companies rent roll-off dumpsters in 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40 cubic yard sizes. A 10-yard box is about the size of a large pickup bed stacked three high; a 40-yard box is the length of a parking space and taller than a person. Some local operators keep one or two sizes only, which keeps their pricing simple.

What size do I need for a garage or basement cleanout?

A 10-yard dumpster handles most single-garage or basement cleanouts. If you are clearing a whole house or an estate, step up to a 20-yard so you are not paying for a second haul.

What size do I need for a roof tear-off?

Shingles are heavy. Most residential roofs fit in a 15 or 20-yard dumpster, but weight matters more than volume, so tell the company how many squares of roofing you are removing and let them size it.

What size do I need for a kitchen or bathroom remodel?

A bathroom usually fits a 10-yard box. A full kitchen with cabinets, countertops, and flooring is typically a 15 or 20-yard job.

Is it better to go bigger?

Usually, yes. A size up costs a little more, while a second dumpster or an overage charge costs a lot more. If you are between sizes, choose the larger one.

Prices and what is included

How much does it cost to rent a dumpster?

In most of the country a 10 to 20-yard rental runs a few hundred dollars for about a week, with 30 and 40-yard sizes costing more. The price depends on your area, the size, the rental period, and the type and weight of debris. Calling two local companies and comparing like for like is the fastest way to a fair price.

What is usually included in the price?

Delivery, pickup, a set rental period, and a weight allowance measured in tons. Ask what the allowance is and what the per-ton charge is beyond it.

Why would I get a bill after the dumpster is picked up?

Almost always because the load weighed more than the included allowance. Heavy materials such as roofing, concrete, dirt, and plaster reach the limit quickly. Prohibited items left in the box can also add a fee.

Are there hidden fees to watch for?

Common extras are overweight tons, extra days past the rental period, a trip charge if the truck cannot deliver or pick up, and fees for prohibited items. A good company lists these up front when you call.

Is a local company cheaper than a national booking site?

Often. National booking sites and brokers resell your request to a local hauler and add their margin. Calling the hauler directly removes the middleman, and the person on the phone can size the job and price it in one call.

Permits and placement

Do I need a permit for a dumpster?

Not if it sits on your own driveway or private property. If it must go on a public street or sidewalk, most cities require a right-of-way permit before placement. The rental company usually knows the local rule and can often handle the paperwork.

Where should the dumpster go?

A flat, solid spot the truck can reach in a straight line, with about 60 feet of clearance for the truck to back in and roll the box off. Keep it clear of low wires, tree limbs, and parked cars.

Will a dumpster damage my driveway?

It can if it is set directly on asphalt or pavers in hot weather. Ask the company to set the dumpster on wooden blocks or boards, which spreads the weight and protects the surface. Many local operators do this on every job.

Can I move the dumpster after it is dropped off?

No. Roll-off boxes weigh thousands of pounds empty and are placed where the truck can safely retrieve them. If the spot is wrong, call the company to reposition it.

What you can and cannot put in

What can I put in a dumpster?

Household junk, furniture, construction and demolition debris, roofing, drywall, lumber, flooring, yard waste, and most remodeling waste. Many companies accept appliances and mattresses with notice.

What is not allowed in a dumpster?

Hazardous materials such as paint, solvents, chemicals, and asbestos; liquids; tires; batteries; propane tanks; and in many areas refrigerators and air conditioners that still contain refrigerant. Ask when you book if you are unsure about an item.

Can I put concrete, dirt, or brick in a dumpster?

Yes, but these are heavy and usually go in a smaller box or a dedicated heavy-debris dumpster with its own pricing. Tell the company before delivery so they send the right container.

How full can I load it?

Level with the top rim. Anything piled above the rim cannot be legally tarped and hauled, and the driver may ask you to remove it before pickup.

Scheduling and the rental period

How fast can a dumpster be delivered?

Local companies commonly deliver next day, and same-day delivery is possible when you call in the morning. Companies based in or near your city are usually the fastest.

How long can I keep the dumpster?

A standard rental period is about 7 to 10 days, with extra days available for a daily fee. Many companies will pick up sooner if you fill it fast, and most will extend if you ask ahead.

Do I need to be home for delivery or pickup?

No, as long as the placement spot is marked or agreed in advance and the truck has clear access.

What if I fill it before the job is done?

Call for a swap. The company picks up the full box and drops an empty one, usually the same or next day.

Picking a company

How do I know a company is legitimate?

A real local operator has a local phone number answered by a person, its own trucks and boxes, a physical service area it can describe, and Google reviews from customers in your area. Every company on this site is the operator itself, not a broker.

Why do you list companies by city?

Delivery radius and pricing are local. A company 10 miles away will usually be faster and cheaper than one 40 miles away, so the directory starts with your city and then shows operators from nearby towns with the distance.

How do I add or claim a company?

Owners can add a company or claim an existing listing from the Add Your Company page. Claimed listings show a verified-owner badge and can carry photos, sizes, hours, and the company's own answers.
